Lectors

The Lector proclaims from the ambo the readings that precede the Gospel. In the absence of the Cantor, he or she may also proclaim the Responsorial Psalm after the First Reading. In the absence of the Deacon, the Lector, after the introduction by the Priest, may announce the intentions of the Universal Prayer from the ambo. Also, in the absence of the Deacon, the Lector may carry the Book of the Gospels in the procession to the altar. (from the General Instruction of the Roman Missal)

Scheduled Meetings/Time Commitment

Scheduled by the Church office except for special times such as Christmas, Easter, etc. Usually, preparation time is an hour or less unless a challenging reading exists. The Deacon calls scheduled meetings. Lectors also participate in the Stations of the Cross during Lent.

Requirements

To be an effective lector, one must adequately prepare for the readings, which include study, prayer, and practice. The Lectionary for Mass: Introduction says, “A speaking style on the part of the readers that is audible, clear, and intelligent is the first means of transmitting the word of God properly to the assembly.”
